Sweden
The Swedish government has extended its temporary ban on foreigners entering Sweden until 15 June 2020. The ban apples to all foreign nationals except those travelling from EEA member states, the United Kingdom or Switzerland.
Swedish citizens and people who are residents in Sweden will be able to return to Sweden. The ban will not apply to people who have particularly important grounds for travelling to Sweden. This includes diplomats, people in need of international protection, such as asylum seekers and people who are to carry out essential functions in Sweden, such as health care professionals and people transporting goods to Sweden. For more information visit the Swedish Police website.
If you’re in Sweden and wish to return to Australia, we recommend you do so immediately as flight options are changing regularly and in some cases becoming limited. Check your route with your airline as a number of key transit hubs are closing or becoming severely restricted. Follow the Australian Embassy social media accounts for regular updates on flight options for leaving Sweden. Our ability to provide consular assistance may be limited.
If you’re returning to Australia, you can transit through Stockholm Airport. But you’ll only be able to leave the transit area of the airport – including to access the airport hotel – if you’ve travelled to Sweden from the EEA, the United Kingdom or Switzerland.
The Sweden Airport Websites below provide updates on flight departures, but be aware that flights are being cancelled at short notice.
More information:
If you can prove you’re not able to leave Sweden (e.g. due to cancelled flights), you can apply to the Swedish Migration Agency for a visa extension or a visitor’s permit depending on your circumstances.
Check local news for border conditions. You can also ask transport providers.
