COVID-19: Belgians urged to eat more fries to help save country’s potato industry
People in Belgium have been urged to eat more fries to help save the country's potato industry. A nationwide lockdown has kept many of the country's 5,000 frites stands closed. Demand for the frozen variety has also nosedived in recent weeks, resulting in hundreds of tons of surplus potatoes. If they are not moved by this year (2020), farmers could lose more than US$135 million. Potatoes are now being delivered to food banks, and businesses are working to boost exports to Central Europe and Africa, where demand remains high.
