March retail sales down 13.3%, biggest drop in 22 years
Singapore retail sales in March recorded its biggest drop in more than 20 years. The index plunged 13.3% on-year — the 14th straight month of decline. Consumers spent less on non-essentials such as apparel, footwear and alcohol. However, demand for essential items such as groceries held up, with spending at supermarkets and hypermarkets rising more than 30% as more people worked from home amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Online sales also continued to rise, with an increase in sales of computers, telecommunications equipment and furniture.
