Victoria’s ombudsman labels Covid border permit system that stranded thousands ‘inhumane’
Only 8% of 33,252 travel exemption applications were granted due to a ‘complex and constrained bureaucracy’
Thousands of Victorians were unjustly denied a Covid-19 border exemption to return home to farewell dying loved ones, attend medical appointments, care for sick family members or start jobs.
That is the finding of an investigation by the Victorian ombudsman into the Department of Health’s border exemption scheme, which offered residents a pathway back from Covid-stricken New South Wales this year.
